I just need a bit of a rant.
I cant understand how Telkom drags its feet when it comes to hooking adsl up.
Literally 1 week before i applied for my line, a guy at work applied. It took 4 days.
I HAVE a landline, but its 2 weeks now since I applied.

Dre how long did it take you to get ur adsl up?
Coz i phoned a techie and he was mumbling some shit about infrastructure or issuing problems or some such kak IN MY AREA, and I thought, but Dre lives like 3 houses away and he has adsl. WTF FAILKOM?
Did u have problems with them?

i want it now

But we dont normally have issues here with telkom.

You should ask to speak to manager and say how shocking the service is ect and how u have to wait so long but others take 4 days and that it unacceptable ect.. and that u will go to the newspapers if they dont sort it out.

Thats what my Dad did, and bam the same day he had it up and running,,

Okes there is hope we just gotta chill it our for like 6 months i rate:

South Africa’s fixed-line competitor to Telkom, Neotel, has signed an agreement with Seacom, to land a new submarine cable system in South Africa, which would connect to Asia and Europe, and provide cheaper internet prices

Construction would start on the cable later this year (2007), and Seacom was hoping to have it finished in the first quarter of 2009.

Telkom holds monopoly rights on access to and pricing of international bandwidth on the current Sat-3 submarine undersea cable, although its exclusivity will expire later this year.

The company has indicated that current capacity, made up of Sat 2 and 3, would be absorbed in the not too distant future, despite the fact that capacity on the route had only recently been upgraded from 40 Gbit/s to 120 Gbit/s.

The $700-million project was aimed at reducing broadband costs in South Africa, as well as the rest of the continent, as Nepad member countries would enjoy free access to it to the cables, the government said at the time.

ow okes are all hoping on the wagon and at present there are like 3 cable being made: MTN and vodacom also doing some to screw telkom. There will be a cable to Europe, India and i think South America. When this comes if we will have cheap and epic internet to rival all the first world countries. Its the most current fibre optic speed cables so we will be as fast as Europe...but becaue our demand here is lower - poor people etc - we may actually see faster speeds. So ya im holding out and hoping. They say by 2010 all 3 will be done - google undersea cable if u wanna know more

Indeed makes sense that our lines will be faster - less traffic - good point hybrid.
not long now hehehe, if i remember correctly telkom tried to put up a little fight a while back, details are sketchy (my memory is fail at best)... cant keep progress down

Just for the record I hate telkom now too. I have no internet at home and their helpline is exactly the opposite of what it is called. The guy asked is it plugged in?! NO shit! Wish I thought of that thanks Captain Obvious! ANYWAY... so basically after we figured out it was in fact plugged in they told me their might be a problem with the dsl line and it will take quite a while to see if it is working properly. SIGH. So basically I have no idea when I'll have internet again.

Id just like to comment on Telkom.

We phoned yesterday for a fault with the line, WAIT FOR IT.....

They came the next day..... ... WAIT FOR IT...

They tryd fixing it (it was still working kinda) but they ended up breaking it ???? sigh..

Then they fixed it, apparently the pole our line is connected to, the box holding all the lines had been flipped upside down, and water had got in, causing the lines to fail and the wires wer just touching, after fixing he ensured me that the line wont drop randomly anymore and that ther is no noise on the line.

AND to confirm from the mouth of a Telkom employee, the lines are going to be upgraded before year end, ppl with a 384 to 512, ppl with 512 to 1mg ect..

mmmm it nice...

well sort of since i know you've phoned them a couple of times and this has been going on for about 3 months.... so ye, not bad bad on their part.

As for the upgrading of the lines - tis great news. mmm maybe get a 1mb line just before they upgrade everything O_o
